In recognition of Pride month, we asked a few members of PRIDE, a Student Club at HBS, to share their thoughts about the significance of this time and why it matters to them. The responses remind us that Pride month is not simply a celebration for the out by the out but also by allies for the closeted. We are reminded during this time of year that "being a leader who makes a difference in the world" is sometimes accomplished simply by being yourself. [...]
Before coming to HBS I was a submarine officer in the US Navy. Submarines were my entire life. They consumed all my working hours and much of my social life too, since almost all my friends were fellow submariners. Nevertheless, it was an incredible experience. I learned so much about leadership, service, and sacrifice. Through the adversity, I made some lifelong friendships. But there was something that the Navy lacked: a community for LGBTQ+ individuals. There were no other “out” individuals on my all-male submarine of 120 sailors. I never even knew that I needed such a community until I got to HBS and became a part of PRIDE. It has changed my perspective on everything. It’s so important to be a part of a community that fully understands what it means for me to be gay. [...]
Love at HBS is an annual celebration of the diverse expressions of love that exist on our campus and in the world around us. Even with the unique challenges presented by the Covid-19 pandemic, love has endured, and our students have continued to share their take on what love means to them. PRIDE is pleased to present this annual showcase of student stories from the LGBTQ community and our wonderful allies here at Harvard Business School. [...]
National Coming Out Day is October 11, 2020, and HBS will be supporting and participating in events that celebrate the LGBTQ+ community all week long. Some students come out before business school, and some students wait until they arrive on campus. Many who participate in events choose to keep their LGBTQ+ status private. We accept everyone in any stage of their coming out process and hope that you will be inspired by the stories of these students as they continue to grapple with a world that is not always accepting of who they are. Now, during this period of wild uncertainty – and, for many, anxiety and loneliness – our visibility and representation matter more than ever. [...]
On the last day of exams of my first semester of the Required Curriculum (RC) year, I walked out of Aldrich with my sectionmate, Dan. We had gotten to know each other through section, playing intramurals together and enjoying the rollercoaster of our first semester at Harvard Business School. On our way to Shad, we struck up a conversation about recruiting as most RCs do around that time of year. Dan knew that I was trans because I had done a MyTake earlier in the semester on National Coming Out Day, organized by the PRIDE Club. I talked about bridging my personal identity with my professional background in health tech. [...]
