“Humanity is on thin ice,” UN Secretary-General António Guterres said during a video message in March 2023. “And that ice is melting fast."
Guterres was responding to the AR6 Synthesis Report from the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which warned of “a rapidly closing window of opportunity to secure a livable and sustainable future for all.” To keep temperature rise to 1.5°C and avoid a cascade of climatological catastrophes—flood, drought, famine, disease, species extinction, and many, many others—the world must cut greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030. Amid the greatest economic, geopolitical, and social uncertainty in years, there is one thing we can be sure about – real value creation and innovation are enduring. This is why we founded the Harvard Builders Club, an alumni community for Harvard’s builders who dare to innovate. The Harvard Builders Club’s mission is to empower leaders who build a better, more creative, and more diverse world. The club is a think tank for innovative ideas and a space for meaningful bonds between the builders community and prominent venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, and tech leaders. [...]
Kate Sweeney has always been fascinated by how space technology can be used to improve people’s lives back on Earth. Sweeney, who is about to complete her M.S./M.B.A., offered jointly by the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) and Harvard Business School, will soon head to SpaceX, where she’ll work in the direct-to-cell connectivity department. Along with enabling normal cell phone features such as text messaging and phone calls, that technology uses the communication between cell phones and satellites for remote search-and-rescue, especially in rural settings with otherwise limited connectivity. At HBS, I use my ability to understand stakeholder needs and solve problems inside and outside the classroom. When analyzing cases, I seek to understand the different perspectives and what those perspectives mean for the proposed action plan. [...]
As I packed my bag to return to Boston after an exciting 2 weeks in Denmark and the Netherlands, I could not help but reflect on my experience there. I traveled to Europe to participate in the Immersive Field Course on Decarbonization and Sustainability ― an MBA course that gives students an opportunity to get out of the classroom and put the skills they’ve learned into practice. When I first stumbled upon this course, I watched the video made by one of the professors and said to myself “I will definitely take this class.” I could tell that this experiential learning opportunity was so connected to the type of future I imagined for the coming decades. Although the time went by so quickly, I appreciated how much I saw and learned in such a short amount of time. I left feeling inspired by what other countries are doing in the sustainability space.
