For mothers, particularly student mothers, COVID-19 has brought about a host of new challenges, including childcare, isolation, a million decisions on risk tolerance, and increased burdens. It also made the world feel like a much larger place if you are far from family and rely on air travel.
The silver linings were in the extra time that we got to spend with our little ones – those in-between moments and mini milestones that we might not otherwise have been present for.

As this academic year comes to an end and I think back on its many triumphs and tough days, I want to take a moment to appreciate what brought us to HBS. My husband, Austin, is an RC student, and we moved to campus last summer with our daughter Adeline, who will be two in August. The decision to attend Harvard Business School as a family was an easy one for us. Having dated since we were 16, we’ve experienced much of life’s offerings together and have always known attending business school was a goal. We grew up in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and went on to separate universities. I went to the University of Wisconsin and Austin attended Northwestern University. From there, our long-distance relationship continued as he consulted for McKinsey in Chicago, and I attended graduate school at Marquette University for Speech-Language Pathology. [...]
Life at HBS looks different for every student as the campus is filled with people hailing from an array of countries, industries, and backgrounds. The lives students led before coming to HBS can play a major role in what they will gain from their time in business school and the experience they will walk away with. One group of people who attend school in a distinctively unique position are those who come to HBS with partners and families. [...]
As the time to say goodbye to HBS and our home in Cambridge comes around, I can’t help but reflect on our move here and the thoughts that were running through my head at the beginning of our first semester. Thoughts of worry and uncertainty, thoughts of how much I was sacrificing to support my partner’s future. As thankful as I was for this incredible opportunity, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of heaviness as I felt I was putting my life on hold for the next two years. How wrong I had it. [...]
