Chad Losee, HBS MBA 2013 graduate and current HBS Managing Director of MBA Admissions and Financial Aid, shares his experience being a dad to his four boys.
Tell us about your family.
My wife and I have four growing boys. Lots of energy and noise around our house most days! For this reason, we try to spend as much time outside as possible.
What is one of your favorite things about being a father/dad?
One of my dad's superpowers was discovering his kids’ interests and then becoming interested in those things himself so we could spend time together. After I started liking computers as a kid, I remember taking a class with my dad at the tech center in my small hometown. When I picked up tennis in middle school, he started playing as well. I am trying to follow this pattern with my own children and am loving developing new hobbies that my kids are helping me to discover.
Describe fatherhood in 3 words.
Humbling. Learning. Fun.
What was it like being a father/dad as an HBS student?
We had the best time as a family at HBS! Our third son was born a few months before I started as a student at HBS. We lived in a great three-bedroom apartment on campus with windows facing one of the main walkways. I remember my kids opening the windows and yelling out to greet me when I came home after class.
As a family we invited someone different over for dinner one night a week over those two years. We had a world map on the wall next to our small kitchen table. My kids got to know classmates from all over the world, learning about their cultures and countries--including how to find them on the map. They peppered my classmates with questions about working in startups, the military, mining, hospitals, factories, aerospace, shipping, and loads of other industries fascinating to kids.
How has being a father/dad changed the way you look at the world?
My kids are always throwing interesting curveballs into the day, some fun and some challenging. Being a father helps me see every day as a new adventure.
I am wishing a great day to all the fathers out there!
