In January 2020, I (Lori Ossip, MBA 2021) alongside MBA 2020 grads Russell Citron, Melanie Sperling, and Billy Tabrizi were working on a new charity event: HBS Got Talent, a massive talent show with live acts and celebrity judges to be held in our 1,000-seat auditorium, Klarman Hall. We had a vision to host a fundraiser that brought the entire community together – students, faculty, alumni, friends, and family. Creating a large-scale event from scratch was no easy feat, and we definitely had hiccups along the way, but the community embraced us with open arms (even when we shifted to a virtual format). We ended up raising over $20K for the Boston Resiliency Fund and the show has become an annual tradition! [...]
In the fall of 2019, Holly Fetter (MBA 2020) and Alexxis Isaac (MBA 2020) looked ahead to their imminent graduation and considered how they could make a difference towards increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) at HBS. Socioeconomic inclusion (SEI) was a frequently-mentioned topic among classmates, so in short order they set up a task force to examine how MBA students experience the role of class. We asked Holly and Alexxis about the task force and their hopes for how it will affect the future of the MBA student experience. [...]
For mothers, particularly student mothers, COVID-19 has brought about a host of new challenges, including childcare, isolation, a million decisions on risk tolerance, and increased burdens. It also made the world feel like a much larger place if you are far from family and rely on air travel.
The silver linings were in the extra time that we got to spend with our little ones – those in-between moments and mini milestones that we might not otherwise have been present for.
While the MoMBA group could not gather with the same frequency as past years, we were still a support group for one another as we navigated the joys and challenges of motherhood. [...]
As this academic year comes to an end and I think back on its many triumphs and tough days, I want to take a moment to appreciate what brought us to HBS. My husband, Austin, is an RC student, and we moved to campus last summer with our daughter Adeline, who will be two in August. The decision to attend Harvard Business School as a family was an easy one for us. Having dated since we were 16, we’ve experienced much of life’s offerings together and have always known attending business school was a goal. We grew up in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and went on to separate universities. I went to the University of Wisconsin and Austin attended Northwestern University. From there, our long-distance relationship continued as he consulted for McKinsey in Chicago, and I attended graduate school at Marquette University for Speech-Language Pathology. [...]
May is Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. In a year characterized by growing levels of anti-AAPI hate across the country, we wanted to stand in solidarity and celebrate the diversity, character, and strength of the AAPI community here at HBS.
The Asian-American Business Association (AABA), in collaboration with students and organizations across campus, is proud to share and honor the stories of our community members. We hope these stories showcase the history, richness, and diversity of the AAPI experience and inspire hope for a world of empathy, compassion, and courage. [...]
