Principal Investigators
Shawn Cole
John G. McLean Professor of Business Administration
Shawn Cole is a professor in the Finance Unit at Harvard Business School, where he teaches and conducts research on financial services, social enterprise, and impact investing. Much of his research examines corporate and household finance in emerging markets, with a focus on insurance, credit, and savings. He has also done extensive work on financial education in the US and emerging markets. His recent research focuses on designing and delivering advice and education over mobile phones, with an emphasis on agricultural and financial management.

Josh Lerner
Jacob H. Schiff Professor of Investment Banking Unit Head, Entrepreneurial Management
Josh Lerner is the Head of the Entrepreneurial Management Unit and the Jacob H. Schiff Professor of Investment Banking at Harvard Business School. He graduated from Yale College with a special divisional major that combined physics with the history of technology. He worked for several years on issues concerning technological innovation and public policy at the Brookings Institution, for a public-private task force in Chicago, and on Capitol Hill. He then earned a Ph.D. from Harvard's Economics Department.
Josh Lerner is the Head of the Entrepreneurial Management Unit and the Jacob H. Schiff Professor of Investment Banking at Harvard Business School. Jonah H. Zahnd
Manager of the Project on Impact Investments and the Social Impact Collaboratory
Jonah Zahnd is the Manager for the Project on Impact Investments and the Social Impact Collaboratory at Harvard Business School. Previously, Jonah was a Team Lead at Goldman Sachs where he led contracted projects on market research, competitive intelligence, and people strategy. Before joining GS, Jonah served as a Consultant with Cognoscere on an education development project in Kurdistan and as a Research Analyst for the Cornell Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management. Jonah has also worked for the US House of Representatives providing policy analysis and constituent management. Jonah earned his BA in Political Science from Westmont College, graduating in 2.5 years with Pi Sigma Alpha Honors, and his Masters of Science in Politics from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

M. Diane Burton
Faculty member in the ILR School at Cornell University
M. Diane Burton is a faculty member in the ILR School at Cornell University. Her primary appointment is in human resource studies with courtesy appointments in organizational behavior and sociology. Prior to joining the Cornell faculty in 2009, she was a faculty member at the MIT Sloan School of Management. Diane started her academic career at the Harvard Business School teaching leadership and organizational behavior. She earned her Ph.D. in sociology at Stanford University and served as a lecturer and researcher in organizational behavior and human resources management at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Director of Research of the Private Capital Research Institute
Leslie Jeng is Director of Research of the Private Capital Research Institute and the Charles Williams Fellow at the Harvard Business School. She has been with the PCRI since its inception. Prior to joining the PCRI, Leslie was an assistant professor of Finance and Economics at Boston University School of Management and taught at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. Her areas of interests are Corporate Finance, Financial Institutions and Regulation, International Finance, and Public Policy. Also, Leslie has worked in investment banking at Goldman Sachs and quantitative investment research at Arrowstreet Capital. Leslie received her BS and BA degrees in Finance and Mathematics from the Wharton School/University of Pennsylvania and her PhD in Business Economics from Harvard University.

Marcus Sander is a Research Associate for Professor Shawn Cole and works on projects involving impact investing and development. Marcus previously worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco in their applied Micro department. Marcus holds a BA with honors in Economics and Mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley.
