Senior Lecturer of Business Administration
Deborah Winshel is a member of the Faculty of the Harvard Business School where she teaches Leadership and Corporate Accountability to first year MBAs and executives.
Most recently, Deborah was a Managing Director and Global Head of Social Impact at BlackRock. She worked with the CEO and senior leadership to direct BlackRock’s own capital to create and fund multiple initiatives and partnerships with employers, fintechs, startups and policymakers to address the lack of economic mobility and food insecurity globally. She also spearheaded the $100MM cornerstone climate investment in Breakthrough Energy. In addition, Deborah partnered with leadership on developing firm-wide DEI, branding and purpose strategies.
During her time at BlackRock, Deborah was also Global Head of Impact Investing, launching the firm’s sustainable investing platform building products and a strategy that established BlackRock as a leader in the field.
Deborah started her career as a management consultant at Strategic Planning Associates, attended Harvard Business School and then joined JP Morgan. During her 13-year career in JP Morgan’s NY and London offices, she worked in global corporate finance and then M&A in Europe, specializing in the consumer, food and retail sectors. As a Managing Director in investment banking, she advised clients on financial and strategic issues and spearheaded the global auto practice.
After JP Morgan, Deborah pivoted to the non-profit world, initially serving as Executive Vice President and CFO at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, then as Chief Operating Officer and President at The Robin Hood Foundation, a leader in the field of venture philanthropy and a pioneer in impact investing.
She was selected by Crain's as one of the "50 Most Powerful Women in New York," and honored with the HBS Women's Association of Greater New York's "Women Who Inspire Us" award, the HBS Club of New York’s John C. Whitehead Social Enterprise Award and the 2021 Harvard Business School Alumni Achievement Award.
She serves on the Board of Directors of Indigo, an ag/climate tech company, where she is a member of the Audit and Finance committees and on the board of Primaloft, a leader in advanced material technology. She also serves on the Board of Directors of The Shed, was a founding board member of Immigrant Justice Corps and a founding member of the Financial Stability Board’s Taskforce on Climate-Related Financial Disclosure (TCFD), helping to develop a global framework to improve and increase reporting of climate-related financial information.
