Two years ago, if someone had asked me about my plans for the near future, earning an MBA would have been the farthest thing from my mind. I was in the early stages of pursuing a career as an engineer. However, buried beneath all the Lagrange multipliers, Laplace transforms, and quantitative constants laid a piece of my future. Everything radically changed for the better after one special experience – Peek.

My time at Harvard Business School can be adequately encapsulated through three pillars– the people, the experience, and the case method.

People
I was impressed with the number of students Peek attracted from a diverse set of backgrounds, schools, and experiences. I had classmates who flew in all the way from the United Kingdom and Brazil to be a part of this immersive experience. Not only was it an avenue for cultural exposure, it also provided us the opportunity to form what I believe will be lifelong connections.

The cadre of professional interests ran the gamut: consulting, manufacturing, nonprofit, you name it! The unique and varied perspectives generated many vibrant and memorable discussions both inside and outside the classroom. Despite our busy schedules, on the last night of the program, we found time to enjoy the nightlife in Boston which is a stone’s throw away from campus. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we planned a Peek reunion for two weeks later in New York City.

Experience
We saw the campus through the lenses of current HBS students and alumni to get a first-hand account of how an MBA from HBS has shaped their lives for the better.

We had the opportunity to speak with Admissions Director Chad Losee and he was able to deconstruct any myths we had related to the admissions process. HBS even developed a mobile app dedicated to Peek. This helped us access program information and built community among the students. Through the app, we joked around, made plans, and followed up on class discussions.

The Case Method
I’ve never experienced a class structure more riveting than the case method. Over the weekend we were given five cases that covered strategy, leadership, ethics, and new venture creation. Everyone read the cases and then discussed their ideas with small groups over breakfast before going into a case discussion.

The case method enabled us to see different perspectives and challenged us to change our own firmly held beliefs. This method caused me to be excited about contributing, because the energetic discussion is about something bigger than ourselves. It also forced us outside of our comfort zones. I was “cold called” by a Professor at the beginning of class. This was as exciting as it was frightening. I gathered myself from all the fright and assembled my line of reason and the discussion catapulted from that basis.

I’ll forever remember the people, the experiences, and the case method teaching from Peek Day. Even if business school is far from your mind, like it was for me, I highly recommend taking this unique opportunity to be a part of a leading business school and to connect with others who share similar passions.
