In 2021, after working in big tech for just over four years, I felt an itch to try something new. I was seeing friends around me leave their more established jobs to pursue exciting opportunities as early employees in startups. The HBS 2+2 program is a deferred admission process for current students in their final year of study, either in college or a full-time master’s degree program. If you are admitted through 2+2, you work for two to four years in a field of your choice before enrolling in the regular HBS MBA Program. Founded in 1968 by 5 Black students at Harvard Business School, the African American Student Union (AASU) is a community for all Black students at HBS inclusive of all backgrounds, familial situations, and social preferences. Our goal is for all Black students to have the support and tools needed to thrive academically, socially, and professionally from the moment they get admitted to HBS, to when they graduate, and beyond. Our membership includes more than 200 students and partners who engage in social events, cultural activities, and academic and professional development workshops. [...]
Our first academic year, known as the Required Curriculum (RC) year, laid a robust foundation for our new directions, but it was our summer internships that truly showcased the breadth of the program. From venture investing at Johnson & Johnson's JJDC to AI and Data Strategy at Moderna, and even philanthropic efforts in Alzheimer's research within Bill Gates' private investment office, my classmates and I didn't just scatter across the biotech industry—we purposefully immersed ourselves in its diverse opportunities. One of us even launched a startup, capturing the program's entrepreneurial essence. These weren't random placements but deliberate career paths, each made possible by the program's comprehensive curriculum. [...]
