Class of 2022 Profile
Last week, members of the Class of 2022 began their HBS journeys, and we are thrilled to have them as part of the HBS community. We just updated the Class Profile with information about this stellar group of leaders, and I want to highlight a few elements of it for you.
Over the past 18 months, a group of business schools developed and agreed to establish common standards for reporting admissions statistics. We have been enthusiastic supporters of these standards because we feel they will make it easier for you and other prospective students to compare consistent statistics across programs.
For HBS, the changes you’ll notice in our Class Profile include:
- International student percentage: Previously we included permanent residents in this number. We are adopting the new standard to have international students include only those without a U.S. passport or permanent residency.
- U.S. Minority percentage: Previously we showed this as a percent of the entire class. We are adopting the new standard to show U.S. minorities as a percent of domestic students and permanent residents.
- Class size: We
enrolled a smaller class of 732 students this year as a result of the deferral
option we offered incoming students as they navigated the onset of the pandemic.
The data presented in the Class Profile reflect these 732 enrolled students. Students
who deferred will be represented in the Class Profile when they enroll over the
next two years.
As I’ve noted before, we are actively exploring increasing our class size beyond our typical 930 for the next two years, though that has not been approved yet. Please also note that the deferral option extended in 2020 was a one-time exception because of the onset of the pandemic. You should apply in the year you are ready to enroll, as we have reverted to our practice of not offering deferrals outside of personal emergency situations.
Over the summer, students, staff, faculty, and alumni have also been deeply engaged in the Dean’s Anti-Racism Taskforce to better acknowledge the continuing racism in our society—especially against African Americans—and to build an institutional plan to be more proactively anti-racist. A full report and action plan from this HBS Taskforce will be released at the end of September 2020.
- Race / ethnicity: With this work as a backdrop, we are excited to begin sharing the racial / ethnic identities of our domestic students, including U.S. citizens and permanent residents. As we explain in the Class Profile, we are reporting race / ethnicity in two ways: according to federal reporting guidelines—which allows each student to be represented in only one racial / ethnic group—and multi-dimensional reporting—to more inclusively share students’ multiple racial / ethnic identities.
The HBS experience puts students at the center of our dynamic, immersive learning environments. We need perspectives from diverse backgrounds in order to fulfill our mission to educate leaders who will make a difference in the world.
