Nanda is working on a project that studies how management of conflict of interest influences professional identity, the role of professional associations, and the boundaries of professional service organizations. He suggests ways of managing conflicts at the levels of the individual practitioner, the organization, and the profession.
Nanda is also studying the organizational strategies of professional service firms. With research colleagues, he is currently working on projects that (a) trace the movement of 'star' professionals across firms and thereby shed light on how professional service firms attract and retain talented professionals, and (b) study the impact of following different growth strategies on long-term survivability of professional service firms. In addition, he is exploring the relationship among professional service firms product market, labor market, and capital market strategies.
Ashish Nanda is Senior Lecturer and C. Roland Christensen Distinguished Management Educator at Harvard Business School. From 2018 to 2021, he was course head for the MBA Required Curriculum course in Strategy. Beginning in 2022, he is teaching an MBA Elective Curriculum course on Strategy in Professional Service Firms. Besides, he teaches courses in leadership, strategy, and professional services in executive education programs.
Nanda’s research, teaching, and advisory work focus on leadership and strategy, particularly in the context of professional services. Over the course of his academic career, he has published more than 120 case studies and course notes, several of which have been bestsellers. He has published several articles and is a coauthor of Professional Services: Text and Cases. During his stint as Director at IIMA, Nanda has written on, and participated in conferences and task forces related to, administration of higher education institutions, particularly professional schools.
Prior to joining HBS, from 2013 to 2017, Nanda served as Director of Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (https://www.iima.ac.in), India’s premier management institute. During his tenure, the number of chaired professorships increased from one to 16, faculty recruiting was accelerated, executive education grew significantly, and a blended-learning MBA program was initiated. Nanda led a fundraising drive which raised a larger commitment by private donors in the four years of his tenure than in the 50 years prior. The fundraising afforded the institute the ability to intensify research investment, expand programs, and invest in infrastructure. The institute begin a major campus expansion project and restore the iconic heritage campus designed by Louis Kahn. Nanda was also actively engaged in the development of the IIM Act, which recognized IIMs as institutes of national importance and granted them significant autonomy. In addition to his responsibilities as director, Nanda taught courses on ethics and professional services in the MBA program and in executive education offerings.
Before joining IIMA, Nanda was the Robert Braucher Professor of Practice at Harvard Law School. He joined HLS faculty in 2008 as a chaired professor with a mandate from to bring the world of practice closer to the world of academia. During his stint at HLS, Nanda established a unique executive education program (https://execed.law.harvard.edu/), which became recognized as the premier executive education program for law firm and corporate counsel leaders. During his tenure, HLS initiated the flagship Leadership in Law Firms and Leadership in Corporate Counsel program, and the Milbank at Harvard associate development program. In addition to establishing executive education, he set up a case studies center at HLS (https://casestudies.law.harvard.edu/), which has become a valuable source of scholarship for law students and practitioners in the profession. Nanda also taught courses for JD and LLM students on leadership in law firms and business and finance for lawyers.
Nanda was a Harvard Business School faculty member for 13 years before joining Harvard Law School. During that time, he taught MBA courses, doctoral seminars, and executive education courses in general management, leadership, ethics, professional services, and joint ventures.
Nanda has advised professional service organizations, including asset management, investment banking, accounting, advertising, engineering consulting, executive search, financial services, human resource consulting, IT consulting, management consulting, legal services, public relations, real estate, and strategy consulting firms. His work with these organizations has spanned advisory board membership, strategic planning, organization design, governance systems, succession planning, compensation systems, recruitment and promotion practices, and leadership development. He has taught globally in executive development programs tailored for professionals, entrepreneurs, and public officials. He has been a non-executive director on boards of public companies, private firms, partnerships, not-for-profit organizations, and academic institutions.
Nanda holds a PhD in Business Economics (Harvard), an AM in Economics (Harvard), a PGDM in Management (IIM Ahmedabad), and a B.Tech. in Electrical Engineering (IIT Delhi). Before pursuing his PhD, he worked for five years with the Tata group of companies as Tata Administrative Services officer. He has received C. Roland Christensen Distinguished Management Educator designation from Harvard Business School, IIT Delhi Distinguished Alumni Award, Harvard Business School's Henry B. Arthur Fellowship, Harvard University's Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics Faculty Fellowship, President of India Gold Medal (twice), and IIMA Director's Gold Medal.
Nanda is married to Shubha Nanda, a faculty member at Tufts Dental School, Boston. The couple has a son, Pranav, who is a neurosurgery resident at Massachusetts General Hospital. In his free time, Nanda enjoys reading and traveling.

During times of economic turbulence, consulting, law, and accounting firms often start offering services and taking on clients they really shouldn’t, just to keep the lights on. This path is perilous. If a firm’s practices have a diffuse mix of clients and unclear strategic positioning, it will weaken the firm’s market profile and lead to internal conflicts, especially about the organization’s future direction.
This article presents two tools that professional service firms can use to manage their client mix and optimize their strategic position. The first is the practice spectrum. All practices fall on a continuum of sophistication that ranges from “commodity” to “rocket science.” Any position on this spectrum can be profitable, though the forces driving profits change as you move along it—as do the capabilities and skills required. Successful practices understand their true position on the spectrum and know which performance levers to pull.
The second tool is the client portfolio matrix, which separates clients into four categories on the basis of cost to serve and willingness to pay. Rather than spreading clients across all four, firms should focus their acquisition efforts and follow different relationship strategies for each type of client.
Excited yet apprehensive after being named CEO of P.F. Chang's beginning July 1st, 2020, Damola Adamolekun was well aware of the extraordinary challenges facing the firm. The closure of businesses deemed "nonessential" owing to the COVID-19 pandemic had devastated the restaurant industry in the United States and abroad. The shock had been particularly unwelcome to P.F. Chang's, an upscale-casual restaurant chain known for serving made-from-scratch, wok-cooked Asian cuisine in contemporary bistros. In recent years, P.F. Chang's had shown weak results in restaurant sales and financial performance. Investment management firm Paulson & Co. had joined hands with TriArtisan Capital Advisors to acquire the firm in 2019, determined to turn it around. However, the new leadership team had not anticipated the havoc a pandemic would soon wreak on the economy and the industry. Adamolekun felt that the opportunity to lead the firm at age 31 was extraordinary, but the future was extremely uncertain in this turbulent environment. He was acutely aware that the future of the company, the returns investors hoped for, and perhaps the trajectory of his own career were all riding on the strategic plan he was developing for P.F. Chang's.Established in 2007, by early 2014 SoundCloud already boasted the second largest number of active music listeners among all streaming services and was recognized as the go-to platform for new artists. Yet, its founders Alexander Ljung and Eric Wahlforss were questioning whether the firm should continue to focus on serving as a lab for emerging musical artists. They were wondering if the firm should instead enter the booming mainstream music-streaming market.Julie Rice and Elizabeth Cutler founded SoulCycle, an indoor cycling studio chain, in 2006 as more than a health club; they wanted it to become a lifestyle brand that would "empower riders in an immersive fitness experience." By early 2015, SoulCycle had grown to 38 studios in seven metropolitan areas. In March 2015, Equinox, a luxury fitness company that had financed SoulCycle's expansion in 2011, approached the co-founders with an offer to buy them out for $90 million each. It was an attractive offer but it would also likely circumscribe their responsibilities. Rice and Cutler had to decide whether to accept the Equinox offer as a prelude to smaller roles at the firm (even potential exit), or continue investing time, energy, and financial resources in growing the business. - Books

Ashish Nanda’s research focuses on leadership, particularly in the context of professional services and institutions of higher education. He has published case studies and articles on professional services in three primary streams: management of professional service organizations, professionals’ labor markets, and professionalism. Nanda has also written on, and participated in conferences and task forces related to, administration of higher education institutions, particularly Indian professional schools.Keywords: Professional Services; Professionalism; Strategy; Leadership; Higher Education; Asia; India; Latin America; ChinaAshish Nanda's research focuses on ethics and economics of managing professional service firms.
Nanda is working on a project that studies how management of conflict of interest influences professional identity, the role of professional associations, and the boundaries of professional service organizations. He suggests ways of managing conflicts at the levels of the individual practitioner, the organization, and the profession.
Nanda is also studying the organizational strategies of professional service firms. With research colleagues, he is currently working on projects that (a) trace the movement of 'star' professionals across firms and thereby shed light on how professional service firms attract and retain talented professionals, and (b) study the impact of following different growth strategies on long-term survivability of professional service firms. In addition, he is exploring the relationship among professional service firms product market, labor market, and capital market strategies.
