Andreas Andresen Professor of Business Administration
Technology, like a relentless force of nature, is reshaping industries at an unprecedented pace. It poses a threat to those who resist and fail to adapt. But it also presents unparalleled opportunities to those audacious enough to harness its power. To thrive in this digital environment, leaders must strike a delicate balance between strengthening the core of their business and boldly building for the future.
Through a series of real-life case studies and thought-provoking discussions, we will explore the ever-evolving digital landscape including recent developments such as generative AI. We will challenge existing paradigms and develop a deep understanding of how technology impacts business strategy, operations, and leadership. We aim to ignite your entrepreneurial spirit and empower you to exploit the potential of technology to build your organization for the future.
Felix Oberholzer-Gee is the Andreas Andresen Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School. An award-winning instructor, his academic work and consulting are focused on competitive strategy and the effects of digital technology on corporate performance. His research has been published in the very best, peer-reviewed journals of his profession and profiled by media outlets around the world, including Financial Times, Le Figaro, New York Times and Wall Street Journal.
Oberholzer-Gee teaches competitive strategy in the HBS MBA program and in executive education courses such as the Harvard General Management Program. He serves as faculty chair of the Senior Executive Leadership Program for China, the Driving Digital Strategy and the Managing Turbulence programs. He has held various leadership roles at HBS, including chair of the MBA program and Senior Associate Dean for the school’s global research centers.
He is a cohost of the popular TED podcast After Hours. Among his happiest times are when he is cooking and eating (not necessarily in this order.)

Get to better, more effective strategy.
In nearly every business segment and corner of the world economy, the most successful companies dramatically outperform their rivals. What is their secret? In "Better, Simpler Strategy," Harvard Business School professor Felix Oberholzer-Gee shows how these companies achieve more by doing less. At a time when rapid technological change and global competition conspire to upend traditional ways of doing business, these companies pursue radically simplified strategies. At a time when many managers struggle not to drown in vast seas of projects and initiatives, these businesses follow simple rules that help them select the few ideas that truly make a difference.
"Better, Simpler Strategy" provides readers with a simple tool, the value stick, which every organization can use to make its strategy more effective and easier to execute. Based on proven financial mechanics, the value stick helps executives decide where to focus their attention and how to deepen the competitive advantage of their business.
How does the value stick work? It provides a way of measuring the two fundamental forces that lead to value creation and increased financial success--the customer's willingness-to-pay and the employee's willingness-to-sell their services to the business. Companies that win, Oberholzer-Gee shows, create value for customers by raising their willingness-to-pay, and they provide value for talent by lowering their willingness-to-sell. The approach, proven in practice, is entirely data driven and uniquely suited to be cascaded throughout the organization.
With many useful visuals and examples across industries and geographies, "Better, Simpler Strategy" explains how these two key measures enable firms to gauge and improve their strategies and operations. Based on the author's sought-after strategy course, this book is your must-have guide for making better strategic decisions. To many people, strategy is a total mystery. But it’s really not complicated, says Harvard Business School’s Felix Oberholzer-Gee, author of Better, Simpler Strategy. As companies respond to intensifying competitive pressures and challenges, they ask more and more of their employees. But organizations often have very little to show for the efforts of their talented and engaged workers. By selecting fewer initiatives with greater impact, companies can make their strategies more powerful. A strategic initiative is worthwhile only if it does one or more of the following: (1) It creates value for customers by raising their willingness to pay. As your company finds ways to innovate or to improve existing products, the maximum price people will be willing to pay for the offering rises. (2) It creates value for employees by making work more attractive. Offering better jobs lowers the minimum compensation that you have to offer to attract talent to your business. (3) It creates value for suppliers by reducing their operating cost. As suppliers' costs go down, the lowest price they would be willing to accept for their goods falls. As companies expand the total amount of value created for their customers, employees, and suppliers, they position themselves for enduring financial success. - Books
