HBS Professors Win Wyss Awards for Excellence in Mentoring Doctoral Students

BOSTON—Three Harvard Business School (HBS) faculty members, Professor Jeffrey T. Polzer, Professor Dennis A. Yao, and Associate Professor Anat Keinan will each receive one of the twelfth annual Wyss Awards for Excellence in Mentoring for their work with students in the Doctoral Programs.

Additionally, Assistant Professors Ryan Raffaelli and Ashley Whillans have been selected as the two runners-up based on the outstanding nominations they received.

The winners and runners-up were selected from a pool of 53 faculty nominees. In keeping with tradition, the main advisors of the selection committee chairs and award winners of the past five years were excluded from consideration.

Polzer is the UPS (United Parcel Servie) Foundation Professor of Human Resource Management. He teaches in the Organizational Behavior Unit.

“In one project, he even went so far as to learn a completely new statistics language (R) in a matter of weeks to directly contribute to our data analysis and he keeps in constant contact with us,” One student wrote of Polzer.

Yao is the Lawrence E. Fouraker Professor of Business Administration and Unit Head of the Strategy Unit.

“Dennis advised me throughout all of my first and second year when I had no idea what I wanted to research,” noted one of his students.

Keinan is a Jakurski Family Associate Professor of Business Administration in the Marketing Unit.

“Anat is a ‘natural mentor’ who has helped doctoral students by providing a unique balance of practical advice and guidance on bigger picture issues,” remarked one of Keinan’s students.

The Wyss Awards are named in honor of Hansjoerg Wyss (MBA 1965) who, in 2004, established the Hansjoerg Wyss Endowment for Doctoral Education. The Wyss Endowment supports a broad range of efforts to strengthen the HBS Doctoral Programs, including fellowships and stipends for doctoral students, increased support for field research, new doctoral course development, teaching skills training, and the renovation of doctoral facilities on campus.
