Professor John Quelch Elected to American Academy of Arts & Sciences

BOSTON, April 14, 2017 -- John A. Quelch, a marketing and health care expert who is the Charles Edward Wilson Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School as well as professor of health policy and management at Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health, has been elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences.

He is one of 228 national and international scholars, artists, philanthropists, and business leaders in the class of 2017 of the prestigious organization, which, since its founding in 1780, has been one of this country’s oldest learned societies and independent policy research centers. Quelch and the other new members will be formally inducted at a ceremony to be held next October in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

“It is an honor to welcome this new class of exceptional men and women as part of our distinguished membership,” said Don Randel, chair of the Academy’s board of directors. “Their talents and expertise will enrich the life of the Academy and strengthen our capacity to spread knowledge and understanding in service to the nation.”

Members of the new class include winners of the Pulitzer Prize, MacArthur “genius award” recipients, Presidential Medal of Freedom and National Medal of Arts recipients, and winners of the Academy, Grammy, Emmy, and Tony Awards.

Quelch currently teaches Strategic Marketing Management in Harvard Business School’s Advanced Management Program for senior executives and an elective course for MBA and MPH students titled Consumers, Corporations and Public Health.

Quelch is the author, co-author, or editor of 25 books, including Building a Culture of Health: A New Imperative for Business (2016); Consumers, Corporations and Public Health (2016); All Business Is Local (2011); Greater Good: How Good Marketing Makes for Better Democracy (2008), and Business Solutions for the Global Poor: Creating Social and Economic Value (2007).

Formerly a Senior Associate Dean at Harvard Business School and co-chair of its Marketing Unit, Quelch also served as Dean of London Business School from 1998 to 2001 and Dean, Vice President, and Distinguished Professor of International Management at CEIBS, China’s leading business school.

In the private sector, Quelch has served as an independent director of twelve publicly listed companies in the United States and the United Kingdom. His public service has included eight years of pro bono service as chairman of the Port Authority of Massachusetts. He is currently honorary Consul General of Morocco in New England.

Quelch received the CBE (Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) for services to British business in 2011 and holds an honorary doctorate from Vietnam National University.

Born in London, Quelch holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Exeter College, Oxford; an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania; a master’s from Harvard School of Public Health (now Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health); and a doctorate in business administration (DBA) from Harvard Business School.

Other Harvard Business School members of the Academy of Arts & Sciences are Professor Jay Lorsch, Senior Lecturer Robert F. Higgins, Professor Arthur Segel, and professors emeriti H. Kent Bowen, James I. Cash Jr., Michael C. Jensen, William Poorvu, John W. Pratt, and the late Howard Raiffa.
