NFL Players to Tackle Custom Program at Harvard Business School

ShareBar

BOSTON—More than thirty NFL players representing teams from across the league, including the Buffalo Bills, Indianapolis Colts, New England Patriots, Miami Dolphins, and Pittsburgh Steelers, will arrive at Harvard Business School (HBS) today to take part in a custom executive education program designed specifically for them that addresses the unique business opportunities and challenges faced by NFL players during and after their professional football careers.

The NFL Business Management and Entrepreneurship Program, which will take place March 19–23, is part of an ongoing initiative by the NFL and the NFL Players Association.

The program is taught by full-time HBS faculty, including Faculty Chairs W. Carl Kester and Michael Roberts, and focuses on topics such as financial analysis, marketing strategies, managing a personal brand, and selected general business skills, as well as the legal, contractual, and tax issues that players face. In addition to the analysis and discussion of relevant case studies, which is a core part of every academic program at HBS, the program will include classes and workshops that emphasize entrepreneurial opportunities and business management.

This year's program will also include a visit from guest speaker Gary Fencik, a former star player for the Chicago Bears and now a partner and head of business development at the private equity firm Adams Street Partners.

Harvard Business School began working with the NFL and the NFL Players Association to develop this special certificate program in 2005. Players must complete an application process in order to attend. Enrollment criteria include level of education; professional business experience; interest in starting, owning, or managing a business; and leadership and community involvement.
