Harvard Business School DBA Candidate Ryan Buell (MBA’07) Wins First Doctoral Programs Dean's Award

BOSTON—Dean Nitin Nohria has announced that Ryan Buell (MBA 2007), a graduating student in the Doctor of Business Administration in Technology and Operations Management (TOM) program at Harvard Business School, is the first recipient of the HBS Doctoral Programs Dean's Award. He will receive the Award at the Doctoral Programs Commencement lunch on May 24. According to Doctoral Programs chair Kathleen L., McGinn, the School's Cahners-Rabb Professor of Business Administration, "Ryan exemplifies the qualities we see in a recipient of this important award – he is a leader, he makes a difference to our community of scholars, and he is highly regarded by everyone who interacts with him. Ryan has contributed to the success of the Doctoral Programs in numerous ways and has demonstrated repeatedly his abilities as a researcher, mentor, and teacher." Buell was lauded by nominators for a wide range of accomplishments, including leading the student-to-student mentoring program, in which new doctoral students are matched with current students to facilitate their entry into the program; mentoring and advising other doctoral students on topics such as course planning, research projects, and career choices; providing review sessions and individual support to MBA students in the required first-year course in TOM; and serving as a Teaching Fellow and Lead Fellow in the MBA pre-matriculation Analytics program, an introduction to the quantitative skills and reasoning required in the MBA program. As a researcher and scholar, Buell has made significant contributions to the theory and practice of service organizations through his work on the effects of customer behavior on operations. He has presented his findings at numerous academic conferences and been recognized by the Decision Sciences Institute. Harvard Business School has honored him with a Wyss Award for outstanding research. "In my view, Ryan is an exemplary doctoral student," wrote one faculty nominator. "I often point to him as an example when giving advice to other doctoral students. He has taken a real leadership role among our students and deeply cares about both the program and HBS. In short, I think he is exactly the kind of doctoral candidate we want for our programs." Buell will join the Harvard Business School faculty on July 1 as an assistant professor in the TOM unit. Harvard Business School grants the Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) in five areas of study: accounting and management, marketing, management, strategy, and technology and operations management. In addition, in conjunction with Harvard University's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, it offers Ph.D. programs in business economics, health policy management, and organizational behavior. At any given time, approximately 130 HBS doctoral students are completing course work or working on their dissertations at the School. |
