Harvard Business School Celebrates 102nd Commencement

BOSTON—Harvard Business School (HBS) held its 102nd Commencement exercises this afternoon. At the diploma ceremony, held on the green in front of Baker Library/Bloomberg Center, eight hundred seventy–six students received their MBAs, while seven were awarded doctorates in business administration (DBA) and ten graduated with PhD degrees offered jointly and in collaboration with the Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences (Health Policy, Business Economics and Organizational Behavior). In addition, one student received her Master's in Management Research (MMR).

The top five percent of the MBA Class of 2012 (47 students) graduated with high distinction as Baker Scholars (named after the School's initial benefactor, George F. Baker). Sixty-five earned their diplomas with distinction. In addition, four MBA degrees were awarded last March.

In his remarks to the graduates, Dean Nitin Nohria spoke about the importance of creating a meaningful life – one that is measured by things far more important than salaries and promotions.

"There are many metrics one can use to measure achievement, whether you're measuring performance in a place like HBS or the achievements that lie ahead of you in your career," he said. "Today, as we celebrate your recent achievements and look ahead to what's to come, I'd urge you to keep in mind generosity, grace, and gratitude as yardsticks that are worth pulling out from time to time, if not more often."

Dean Nohria's message had special significance for the graduates on a Commencement Day tinged with sadness because of the accidental death of their classmate Nathan Bihlmaier earlier in the week. Bihlmaier's wife and family were on hand to accept his diploma, and classmates wore black bands and buttons bearing his initials in tribute.
