Tom Tierney, Cofounder and Chairman of The Bridgespan Group, to Address Graduating Harvard MBA Students on Class Day
BOSTON—Tom Tierney (MBA 1980), cofounder and chairman of The Bridgespan Group, a nonprofit organization that collaborates with mission-driven leaders and organizations to help accelerate social impact, will be the Harvard Business School’s Class Day keynote speaker on Wednesday, May 25 (the day before the Harvard University Commencement exercises). The ceremony, which will take place on the Baker Lawn on the School’s campus in Boston, will also include a welcome from the co-presidents of the MBA Class of 2016, the presentation of faculty teaching awards, and a student address. After studying economics at the University of California at Davis and graduating with highest honors, Tierney served as a field engineer for Bechtel International in North Africa before entering the Harvard Business School MBA program. After graduating from HBS with distinction in 1980, Tierney joined the management consultancy Bain & Co., where he was promoted to partner after three years and served as the managing director of Bain’s San Francisco office from 1987 to1992. In 1993, he became the firm’s president and first worldwide managing director. During his tenure with Bain, Tierney grew the company’s revenue six-fold while significantly expanding its international operations. In 1999, he cofounded The Bridgespan Group with several other Bain partners. He stepped down as Bain’s CEO in 2000 to focus on his work with Bridgespan. From 2014 to 2015, Tierney served as the West Point Class of 1951 Chair for the Study of Leadership at the United States Military Academy. He also serves on a number of boards, including eBay, The Nature Conservancy, and the Hoover Institution. In addition, he chairs the advisory board of the HBS Social Enterprise Initiative. The HBS Class Day ceremony is planned and conducted by a committee of second-year MBA students. It is open to members of the graduating class and their guests as well as HBS alumni, faculty, and staff. Click here for more information on HBS Class Day and Harvard University Commencement. |
