Four Harvard Business School Faculty Members Receive Class of 2022 Faculty Teaching Award Honors
BOSTON—Students from the Harvard Business School (HBS) graduating class of 2022 honored four faculty members with Faculty Teaching Award honors. Mattias Fibiger, Nori Gerardo Lietz, Emily McComb, and David Moss, were recognized for their excellence and dedication to teaching, and for the positive impact they had both in and out of the classroom. Students were asked to identify professors who have enhanced the learning experience and were specifically asked to reflect on which professor best demonstrated the following six criteria in both their Required Curriculum (RC) first year and Elective Curriculum (EC) second year:
“The faculty at HBS have such a visible place in the HBS experience as leading the case method discussions, but our class has also experienced the incredible impact they have outside the classroom with coffee chats, dinners, career advice, startup critique, and a whole host of moments we’ll treasure,” said Brandon Angelini and April Weathers, 2022 Class Day Committee co-chairs. “On behalf of our entire class, we thank the entire faculty team that has helped create our HBS experience, and congratulate this year’s Faculty Teaching Award recipients.” Mattias Fibiger, an assistant professor of business administration in the Business, Government, and International Economy (BGIE) Unit, was recognized for his outstanding contribution to the BGIE classroom during the class of 2022’s RC year. This is Fibiger’s first time receiving a Faculty Teaching Award. “Teaching one of the more difficult classes in the RC, Fibiger uses the case method flawlessly,” one student said. “He led us through difficult content and sometimes controversial topics by utilizing the knowledge and perspectives of the entire section, all while inspiring us to take responsibility for our place in the world as future HBS graduates.” “All HBS professors are well-prepared, but Fibiger’s level of preparation elevated the classroom experience from the moment he introduced each case to the section. No case was too big (or too small) for him,” another student noted. “His academic training as a historian served as a reservoir of knowledge from which the class would regularly draw. His presentations—both in terms of content and delivery—were world-class. Lastly, Fibiger took the time to get to know each of us by showing up outside of the classroom with his time, energy, and resources. He is truly the best of the best, and we're fortunate to have spent time learning from him.”
Nori Gerardo Lietz, a senior lecturer of business administration in the Finance and Entrepreneurial Management Units, was recognized for her outstanding contribution as a teacher in the Real Estate Private Equity and Starting a Private Investment classes during the class of 2022’s EC year. This is the second time Lietz has received the award. Students applauded her ability to engage and motivate students in classes that are considered challenging. “The first thing Professor Lietz told me about her class was that it was going to be one of the hardest classes I would take at HBS, and she was not wrong. She challenged me in ways I did not think the HBS classroom would challenge me and did so in a playful manner. She made coming to class such a joy,” one student remarked. “From the review sessions to group dinners and a Freedom Trail tour, you can tell that she cares. Lietz is a trail blazer in the real estate industry and someone whose achievements speak for themselves. I am so happy that she will be honored with this award and I wish her all the best going forward.” “Professor Lietz has been one of the most influential people during my time at HBS. She cares so much about our ability to learn a challenging topic properly—I cried over many cases and assignments but I’m so grateful she pushed and challenged me,” another student said. “I feel honored and fortunate to have taken two of her classes. I can’t thank her enough for what’s she’s taught us and for being so caring and supportive”
Emily McComb, a senior lecturer in the Finance Unit, was recognized for her outstanding contribution in the Finance 2 (FIN 2) classroom during the class of 2022’s RC year. Receiving the award for the first time, students applauded her for her perspective and enthusiasm towards the subject at hand. “Professor McComb brought FIN 2 to life in a way that made complicated topics seem like something we could grasp, and dare I say, fun. From the small things like kicking off each class with a song relevant to the case, to the big ones like facilitating our class discussions, she ensured no one was left behind and that we walked away with generalizable insights from each case,” a student commented. “It was clear how much she invested in each student and our section—leading optional review sessions and following up with our section leadership. HBS is an institution that prides itself on having the best professors and she is the kind of professor we come to HBS for.” “The detail and preparation Professor McComb puts into each class is evident. She has exquisite command of a case discussion. Her boards are immaculate and she has an amazing ability to facilitate a conversation that welcomes participation from students with a diverse set of experiences,” another student said. “Whether we were providing a simple number, asking a question that others also struggled with, or cracking the case, our contributions were all valued.”
David Moss, the Paul Whiton Cherington Professor of Business Administration and unit head of the BGIE Unit, was recognized for his outstanding contribution in the Creating the Modern Financial System (CMFS) classroom during the class of 2022’s EC year. Receiving the award for the 11th time, students commended Moss for his ability to incorporate his knowledge of politics, philosophy, history, and current affairs into the case method classroom. “Professor Moss’s incredible ability to demonstrate the power of history and policy to change the course of nations gave me the courage I needed to choose a career in the public sector,” one student said. “Beyond his outstanding classroom sessions, he made time to help me think through and craft a career path, and introduced me to several professors and professionals who also provided guidance. Above all, his kindness, positive reinforcement, and faith in me gave me the confidence to believe I could thrive in every setting and would always be supported along the way. I took several bold steps this year and he deserves all the credit for teaching me to dream again.” “Professor Moss’s CMFS tackles some of the hardest questions about how best to organize our financial markets. He artfully guides the discussion to the core questions and tradeoffs that private actors and policy makers have grappled with in creating our financial system and pushes students to engage with their prior-held beliefs in challenging, yet productive ways,” another student said. “I’ve not been in a class where so many people have changed their views as a result of interrogating the issues in class discussion. That is a testament to Professor Moss’s skill as an educator. His class exemplifies the very best of what the case method can and should be. The only shame to be found here is that not every HBS student can take his course. Professor Moss is a gift to students and to the HBS community.” |
