Harvard Business School Professor Ranjay Gulati Introduces Deep Purpose Podcast
Ranjay Gulati: Hi, I'm Ranjay Gulati, a professor at the Harvard Business School. My new podcast, Deep Purpose, is a captivating conversation with a brave group of the world's top CEOs. More and more companies are embracing Deep Purpose to do good while doing well.
Ranjay Gulati: What if you worked in a company where every day you were of help to people, your work transformed lives?
Ranjay Gulati: These are tough times for our global economic community. War, pandemic, a faltering supply chain, spiraling inflation, and workers ready to quit for something better. It's a lot to lead through. Roz Brewer is the CEO of Walgreens.
Roz Brewer: People want to know that their work is going to count for something greater than just delivering the profits. When people are purpose driven, they tend to run through a wall for you.
Ranjay Gulati: Each guest tells revealing and compelling stories about their quest for Deep Purpose. In the Middle East, Mona Ataya built an online retailer called Mumzworld. She's one of few women to run a company its size in the socially conservative region. Mona's purpose? Create an indispensable place for mothers to make informed consumer decisions.
Mona Ataya: You empower a mother, you empower a child. You empower a child, and you change the world.
Ranjay Gulati: Great business leaders often find their purpose, their entrepreneurial spark, early in life. David Velez founded Nubank, a hugely successful bank and credit card company in Latin America. As a youngster working and growing up on the family farm, Velez raised his own money to go to Stanford.
David Velez: And I decided that the best investment and the best startup I could do was buying a pair of cows because the cows multiply themselves.
Ranjay Gulati: My Deep Purpose podcast gives you a close view of top corporate leaders around the globe as they navigate our tough, sometimes frightening, modern business environment. Their goal? To do exceptionally well while promoting real social good.
David Velez: The real values are the way you behave, not the way you talk. If you have a purpose, you're going to make more money in the long run.
Ranjay Gulati: The most brilliant business minds today will reveal their professional and personal purpose, how they drive their companies towards innovative and sometimes controversial goals. Sim Tshabalala is the first black CEO of the biggest bank in Africa.
Sim Tshabalala: We don't believe that the sole purpose of management is to maximize profits. If you believe in that higher purpose and if you believe that you need to be maximizing for all your shareholders, you will do the right thing.
Ranjay Gulati: I'm Ranjay Gulati. Join me on Deep Purpose to discover how companies lead with a meaningful and vigorous purpose, deliver profit, and serve employees and customers. Deep Purpose, a limited run series coming summer 2022.
