“This journey towards self-awareness and appreciation of different perspectives is invaluable in my development as a manager and leader.”
Coming to HBS is like...
Delving into a captivating novel, where each chapter, from the invigorating classroom debates prompted by the cold call method to the enduring traditions like Flag Day, propels the narrative of our growth forward. This carefully woven story (educational experience), akin to a masterful literary work, ensures that our experiences in the dynamic sections and moments of introspection contribute to our evolution as future leaders. Just as readers immerse themselves in the plot with curiosity, our journey at HBS is a transformative tale, leading us towards learning and self-discovery.
What is your most memorable classroom moment?
One of my favorite cases last semester in Financial Reporting and Control (FRC) was “OXXO's Turf War Against Extra,” which is the largest convenience store chain in Mexico. Being Mexican-American and having grown up going to OXXO made the classroom experience memorable because I had the opportunity to share my authentic, first-hand experience. Contextualizing a case with personal anecdotes is always a rewarding experience because it humanizes the stakeholders and makes the case facts more tangible for my peers who may be unfamiliar with Mexico or OXXO. I had a lot of fun sharing my perspective!
What is one thing you brought with you to campus, and one thing you'll be leaving with?
I brought with me a metaphorical "compass"—an innate sense of direction fueled by my ambitions and commitment to pay it forward. This compass, nurtured by my past experiences and personal values as a first-generation Mexican American, guided my initial steps in this new chapter, pointing me toward opportunities for growth and learning.
I am leaving with a "map”—no longer just relying on my internal compass. This map is a tangible collection of reflections, ideas, case lessons, wisdom shared by peers and guest speakers, and memories that chart my journey of growth and discovery thus far. It's marked with routes of where I've been and where I intend to go, informed by the diverse perspectives I've encountered and the strategic insights I've gained. This map doesn't make my compass obsolete; instead, it complements it, providing a richer understanding of the terrain ahead and equipping me to navigate the complexities of the business world with confidence and agility.
How have diverse perspectives in your section contributed to your understanding of business concepts, leadership, and/or problem-solving?
The case method at HBS has transformed the way I approach learning and management. It's magical in how it emphasizes the importance of listening, shifting my prioritization of always having answers to appreciating diverse perspectives and asking the right questions. This method fosters effective communication and a deep understanding of managerial complexities. By engaging with various cases and embracing the insights of my peers, I've learned the importance of diversity in shaping effective leaders. This journey towards self-awareness and appreciation of different perspectives is invaluable in my development as a manager and leader.
If you could give one piece of advice to prospective students, what would it be?
The best advice I can provide is to prioritize intentionality and self-awareness throughout the application journey. Approach each step purposefully, allocating your time, energy, and focus accordingly. Whether it is studying for standardized tests, cultivating professional relationships, or reflecting on your aspirations, be intentional in every decision; never make hasty choices.
By integrating intentionality and self-awareness into your application journey, you not only enhance your authenticity (which HBS values) but also lay a strong foundation for achieving your long-term goals with purpose (a key skill of an HBS leader). The rest will take care of itself.
