“While HBS has challenged me, I have also never been in an academic setting more supportive than HBS, and this support has given me the confidence to take greater risks”
Coming to HBS is like...
Those “choose your own adventure” books, but the HBS version is filled with fascinating professors, supportive peers, and a lot of cases. Before coming to HBS, I imagined that business school would box me into a specific career, but now my biggest challenge is choosing which path and career seems most exciting to me.
What is your most memorable classroom moment?
This semester I am taking Business, Government, & the International Economy (BGIE), where each class session focuses on the economic and political environments of a different country. At the end of each class, my section mates from the country we discussed share their perspectives from growing up in that country. I love these testimonials because they add a more human element to the case studies and remind me of how global HBS's domain truly is.
What is one thing you brought with you to campus, and one thing you'll be leaving with?
One thing I brought to campus is the belief that business and the private sector have a responsibility to ensure that people with disabilities are included in our economy. I have been able to work with the Disability Advocacy and Affinity Group (DAAG) on thinking of ways to continue to build HBS's voice in the space of disability and business. One thing I will take with me from HBS is the confidence I have gained from interacting with my exemplary professors and section mates. While HBS has challenged me, I have also never been in an academic setting more supportive than HBS, and this support has given me the confidence to take greater risks, which is something that I hope to bring with me into the workforce and beyond.
How have diverse perspectives in your section contributed to your understanding of business concepts, leadership, and/or problem solving?
The diversity of perspectives in my section shines through most when I see how my section mates with different points of view engage with the same content. For example, we recently had a case that focused on why companies conduct layoffs. It was interesting to hear the different points of view from my section mates who have a finance background versus those who have worked in the human resources space. This case taught me about the importance of looking at business decisions from a variety of different perspectives.
If you could give one piece of advice to prospective students, what would it be?
To think of their time at HBS as a time for discovery and exploration. I loved the job that I had when I applied for HBS, which forced me to think about how attending HBS would change the trajectory of my life versus just helping me move into another career path or job. Having a more long-term view of the value of HBS allowed me to use the opportunities and courses that HBS offers to explore my curiosities around ideas such as starting my own startup. While at HBS, I have continued to build my curiosity by joining different clubs and learning from guest speakers like Astro Teller, who leads Google's X “Moonshot factory.”
