After graduation, and a brief stint in Birmingham, I’m heading back to Georgia after accepting a position in consulting and I couldn't be happier with the decision. Cemented by the fact that my two years at HBS have granted me the privilege of determining where and how I can strive to be a "leader that makes a difference in the world," a return became a no-brainer. Being an HKS/HBS joint degree ("Jointee") has allowed me unbridled access to world-renowned faculty whose experiences span the public and private sectors. One-off conversations with professors have literally led to entire career shifts for me. I was introduced to my first MBA internship through a case in my Joint Degree Seminar Class. I have had coffee chats with a former United States Governor, Fortune 500 CEOs, revered thought leaders, and international diplomats solely because of events on campus and in the classroom. I have been elected as Co-President of the Black Investment Club and as Section Senator for the HBS Student Association which has provided me access to Harvard leadership and insight to capital planning and university affairs. Just one of these individual experiences alone could be considered life-changing, and consequently I feel my life changing and perspective expanding every single day. [...]

When I matriculated at HBS, on top of my worries about my qualifications (or lack thereof), I wasn’t sure what industry/sector I wanted to pursue for a summer internship. After some research and reflection, I focused on manufacturing. I was an aerospace systems and standards engineer prior to HBS, and I thought the manufacturing sector would provide me with opportunities to combine my technical skills with the business skills I was acquiring at HBS. [...]
Malcolm McClain (MBA/MPP 2023) has been named the first recipient of the Harvard Business School (HBS) RISE (Recognizing Individuals Seeking Equity) Career Fellow, with his income supplemented for one year following graduation so he can work with, learn from, and make a difference in a growing business that is creating economic opportunity for marginalized communities in the United States. McClain, who also completed a master’s in public policy at the Harvard Kennedy School, will serve as chief of staff at BrightUp, a seed-stage Boston-based fintech company focused on democratizing wealth building and well-being.
